Did you know 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3? Yet, two-thirds of pet owners aren’t aware they should have a dental health plan. Just as it is for us, poor oral hygiene is associated with your pet’s overall health, including the brain, heart, kidneys, and even increased diabetes risk.
Processed foods, especially kibble, contribute to dental issues, while fresh, less-processed diets support oral health. Adding vegetables, mushroom probiotics, or herbs can help—check out Green Juju’s frozen blends!
Brushing at least once a week is crucial. Start slow—introduce toothpaste, rub it on gums, and gradually transition to a toothbrush. Positive reinforcement makes the process easier. While pet-safe toothpaste is available, homemade options offer better control over ingredients. We’ve posted some recipes below!
With consistency, maintaining your pet’s dental health is simple and rewarding!
Homemade Pet Toothpaste Ingredients:
Aloe vera soothes, while olive leaf extract acts as a natural antibiotic. Safe essential oils like peppermint, clove, thyme, or eucalyptus can be added. For abrasiveness, use baking soda, bentonite clay, sea salt, or diatomaceous earth. Coconut oil is also excellent for oral health—check out CocoTherapy for more benefits!
Avoid human toothpaste, as ingredients like xylitol and fluoride are toxic to pets.

Fresh Additions for Oral & Gut Health:
Parsley freshens breath, thyme has antimicrobial properties, and cilantro supports digestion and immunity.
Chewing for Dental Health:
Frozen raw bones are best but should be avoided for dogs with dental issues, pancreatitis, or weight concerns. Bully sticks, Himalayan chews, horns, and antlers help remove tartar and promote saliva production.
For dental chews, sprays, and water additives, choose herbal or enzyme-based options without vegetable oils, sugars, artificial additives, or ingredients from China.
