If you’ve noticed a few more "sparkles" (aka gray hairs) on your pet’s muzzle lately, you aren't alone. At The Holistic Pet Nutrition Center, we see aging as a cherished life stage that requires a shift in mind-frame, nutrition, and care. As dogs and cats age, their needs naturally change, and with thoughtful care and nutrition you can help keep those golden years truly golden.

Every pet ages in their own unique way, but certain changes tend to appear over time. Some are physical, others behavioral, and many happen gradually enough that they’re easy to overlook. Noticing these changes early allows pet parents to adjust care proactively. Aging isn’t something to fear, it’s a life stage that simply calls for different care.
As pets enter their senior years, changes often show up in three key areas:
Nutrition & Metabolism
Easier weight gain
Gradual muscle loss
Appetite changes, including water
Skin irritations and “lumps & bumps”
Hair loss & changes in coat
Mobility & Quality of Life
Stiffness after resting
Hesitation to jump or climb
Shorter bursts of play
Reduced enthusiasm
Changes in posture or gait
Advanced Care & Physical Comfort
Changes in social interaction
Fluctuating appetite or thirst
Increased sensitivity to stress
Sleeping more than usual
Difficulty with daily habits like grooming or going outside

Nutrition plays an especially powerful role in supporting aging bodies. As pets grow older, their ability to digest and process nutrients becomes less efficient, making food quality more important than ever, which is why we focus on:
Bioavailable Proteins: Think of these as readily available proteins that the body can immediately use. Prioritize high-quality muscle meats that are easier for an aging digestive tract to break down and utilize for muscle maintenance.
Chronic inflammation is an enemy for aging. We recommend eliminating inflammatory foods and treats. Good treats to replace them are organ based treats for their ease of digestion and nutrient availability, or fish based treats with omegas which also support cognition. CBD is a great anti-inflammatory product that comes in treats and tinctures.
Many senior pets benefit from therapeutic levels of joint-support nutrients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, hyaluronic acid, or green-lipped mussel, which act like natural lubricants, helping protect cartilage and maintain mobility. A recommended joint supportive multivitamin is Nupro Silver.
Maintaining a healthy weight is equally important. Excess weight puts additional strain on aging joints and organs, while stable blood sugar supports consistent energy levels and long-term health. Look for foods like Nature's Logic Sardine, Lotus Senior, or Raised Right specialty diets for kidney or liver support too. We carry some of these in store, and some are special order, usually arriving within a week.
The connection between gut health and brain function is also increasingly recognized. Supporting the digestive system with appropriate nutrition and beneficial bacteria via probiotics or FMT may help maintain overall wellness, including cognitive clarity.
Dog and cat food brands that provide a senior formulas should take these nutritional needs into consideration. We recommend senior formulas for pets showing multiple signs of aging mentioned above, although other food brands have great products for seniors that may not be labeled as such. Ask your friendly sales associate at your local store for more info!
Feeding tip: For pets with reduced appetite, palatability boosters like bone broth can encourage eating while providing valuable hydration and nutrients.

Mobility changes are one of the most noticeable aspects of aging, and there are many ways to support comfort and vitality.
Sometimes "wellness" is as simple as a well-placed rug. Hardwood floors can feel like ice to a senior pet. Adding runners, ramps, and comfortable beds reduces daily physical stress and prevents micro-injuries.
Don’t forget exercise. Gentle, regular movement helps maintain muscle tone, joint flexibility, and circulation, even if exercise looks different than it did in earlier years.
Mental wellness is just as important. Cognitive enrichment through exercise and interactive toys & games like lick mats, snuffle mats, or cognitive treat games can help keep senior pets mentally engaged and emotionally fulfilled.
Complementary therapies such as laser therapy, acupuncture, and massage work are increasingly used to support circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being.

One of the hardest parts of being a pet parent is the uncertainty of the final chapter. We believe that preparing for their final stage of life with dignity and compassion, is the final act of love we can provide.
Using Quality of Life Scales: Many pet parents feel like "knowing when it's time" is a guessing game. It can be difficult to remain objective when your heart is involved. We recommend the HHHHHMM Scale (Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, and More Good Days than Bad). By scoring these areas from 1 to 10 each week, you can see a "map" of your pet’s well being. When the scores trend downward, it’s a science-backed signal that it may be time to pivot from "fixing" to "comfort."
Hospice & "The Bucket List": In this stage, we prioritize flavor and joy. This is the time for favorite treats and places, like a sunny spot in your backyard. Cherish your time together, and when not feeling well, try natural calming support like Austin & Kat’s CBD oil or chews with herbal additives.
Preparing for Peaceful Transitions: You have more options than you might realize for saying goodbye. What most hope for is for nature to decide when the time is right, but many times we must make that decision. You’re still not alone and will have the guidance of the professional you choose. While many choose a traditional veterinary clinic, both Missoula and Harmony are also fortunate to have compassionate at-home euthanasia providers that service our areas. This option allows your pet to pass in their favorite spot, surrounded by familiar smells and family.
Aging is a journey, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Our team is constantly researching the latest in pet wellness so we can provide you with the most accurate, compassionate advice possible.
Stop by the store this month, we’re happy to help you find the perfect protocol for your senior pet!
